Chemeketa Community College commissioned AC + Co to design this new 7,100 s.f. facility which is located in the southeast corner of Dallas High School’s parking lot. The facility houses the Dallas Center’s staff offices, student services, a computer and science laboratory classroom, learning center and multipurpose room.
Corban University Master Plan
Corban University is a faith-based liberal arts school located in Salem, Oregon. With consistent growth and an expanding mission, our firm was asked to assist in the first comprehensive master plan for the campus. The year long process included research from administration, faculty, staff and students to establish the university’s needs and better define their mission.
Located on a hillside, it was Corban University and AC + Co’s vision to design a campus with excellent connectivity, providing the university with improved facilities, that will encompass the unique viewpoint of their location and incredible views while creating convenient parking solutions for students, staff and visitors. Most importantly was to create pedestrian paths that connected everyone to classrooms, housing, administration, and recreational activities, while developing quality gathering locations on campus for all to enjoy.

McGilchrist Roth Buildings
SALEM, OREGON
The historic adaptive reuse and rehabilitation of the McGilchrist Roth Buildings has served to revitalize Salem’s downtown core. These two 1916 structures were stripped down to the original studs and conjoined to become one building. During demolition, a program of tenant spaces and occupant needs was developed. The McGilchrist and Roth buildings underwent major structural repairs and seismic upgrades, including concrete footings, shear walls, steel beams and columns, as well as hundreds of new floor joists. Approximately 3,500 board feet of lumber were salvaged from the two buildings. The wood was kiln dried and milled into 1x trim material to be used as interior ornament.
The building now includes nine second-story apartments of various size and layout. All apartments feature exposed brick walls and highlight the historic intricacies of the building’s past use. The first floor includes five new businesses, including Gayle’s Italian Market, Archive Coffee and Bar, Ricky’s Bubbles and Sweets, Doty, Pruett, Wilson, PC, CPA firm, and Diversified Financial Benefits. Each business exhibits its own distinct look while embracing the historic nature of the building. As noted by Sheri Wahrgren, Salem’s Downtown Revitalization Manager, a significant rehabilitation like this will increase the property values of all downtown buildings and serve to reinvigorate Salem’s commercial core.
Goss Stadium – Oregon State University
In 1999, our firm designed a completely new baseball stadium for Oregon State University, upgrading Coleman Field, which is the oldest active baseball field on a college campus in the United States. Goss Stadium is a state-of-the-art college baseball facility with seating for 1,460 people. When the Beavers’ baseball program won their first NCAA World Series Championship in 2006, the University decided to expand the baseball facilities to seat approximately 3,000 spectators and provide other amenities.
Completed in November 2008, the stadium expansion provides a seamless continuation of the original stadium façade which fits into the context of the college campus with the use of brick and arches. The expansion bends towards the diamond to provide better viewing opportunities while maintaining campus pedestrian and vehicular service accesses. For cost considerations, the design avoided conflicts with the existing field light standards and one existing bullpen.
The design includes additional seating along the right and left field baselines, a new sky box viewing area with covered exterior box seats for booster club supporters of the program, an academic center for baseball athletes, and a reception/display area for baseball memorabilia of the fine history of Oregon State Baseball, including the NCAA World Series Championship trophies. The expanded facility also provides additional handicap accessible restrooms, expanded concourse viewing areas, storage areas for university athletics, sitework, and new technological infrastructure for the outfield scoreboard and television production trucks. The new seating brings spectators down to field level providing optimal views and maintains the intimacy of the college game.
The Meridian
SALEM, OREGON
One of our newest projects involving mixed use development, this 6-story (plus two basement levels), 190,000 s.f building was built to house Class A office space and 89 luxury condo suites. The downtown location was picked for its close proximity to Salem Hospital, the new Salem Conference Center and for its view of the Willamette River. Ample parking, both covered and uncovered, is available for this facility, which is a rarity for structures in downtown Salem.

Linus Pauling Middle School – Corvallis
CORVALLIS, OREGON
Following our pre-bond planning Corvallis School District contracted AC + Co to design this replacement middle school. The first of our school projects to receive LEED-certification, Linus Pauling Middle School is conveniently located next to the Osborne Aquatic Center and houses 600 students with the capability of expanding to 750-student capacity. Every classroom has access to natural light. The classrooms are designed to be clustered into houses for student gatherings. The school has two gymnasiums, a 125-seat community room with theater-style seating, a commons area that is used for food service, meetings, and performances, a centrally located media center, an elevator, and many other amenities for students and staff. A safety lock down system was designed for the school that utilizes key cards. This Silver-LEED certified school was ready for the start of the 2004 school year.
Willamette Department of Theatre Ranked Best in Nation
Willamette University’s Department of Theatre has been ranked number one on OnStage’s “The Best B.A. in Theatre Programs in the Country in 2015.”
“It was a no-brainer for us that this was the best program in the country right now,” said Chris Peterson, OnStage’s founder and editor-in-chief.
OnStage is an independent blog staffed by volunteers who are educators, writers, audience members and theater lovers. Their mission is to critically cover all types of theater. The blog has grown rapidly since its founding in May and currently has 5,000 viewers per day, said Peterson.
“It’s a national blog with a national reputation,” said Rachel Kinsman Steck, associate professor of theater and academic co-chair at Willamette. “We’re honored that the B.F.A., M.F.A. and B.A. programs that they listed are programs that we’re similar with already. They set high standards.”
“We know that we’re a small program so you don’t get a lot of notoriety,” said Susan Coromel, professor of theater and artistic co-chair at Willamette. “The most important thing is highlighting Bachelor of Arts programs and having a well-rounded theater artist who can go onto a career or a graduate program.”
Peterson said hundreds of regionally-accredited B.A. programs were ranked according to criteria that included but were not limited to the university’s support of theater, resources in the area, tuition and financial aid. For information, go to onstageblog.com.

Our Saviors Lutheran Church
Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, located on Baxter Hill in Salem, involved approximately 38,000 s.f. and includes a small 400-seat sanctuary, 600 seat multi-purpose room for worship, recreation and fellowship, and an education/administration wing providing space for a preschool program and comprehensive Christian education program. Our Savior Lutheran Church has since used the planned space to expand their preschool to include kindergarten, first and second grades. The 10 acre site has provided space for further expansion of their Faith House Community Hall and proposes an 800-seat future sanctuary, playground and ballfields.
M. Lee Pelton Theater – Willamette University
Originally built as a gymnasium in 1927, Willamette University’s historic M. Lee Pelton Theatre (previous the Kresge Theatre) was renovated to sustain and improve the building’s use for theatrical productions. New seating, stage lighting, and support spaces were developed. Furthermore, the project included the addition of an elevator/stair tower as well as the completion of numerous deferred maintenance issues such as seismic upgrade, window replacement, and brick veneer rehabilitation. Numerous existing building elements were preserved and highlighted to express the historic character of the building. Existing brick arches, corbels and wall surfaces, as well as the original gymnasium hardwood flooring were all preserved and restored to their original condition. To facilitate theater staging, rigging and lighting, a new state-of-the-art “tension grid” was added above the performance space at the level of the original bow-string roof trusses.
Willamette University’s Department of Theare recently was lauded as OnStage’s “Best B.A. in Theatre Programs in the Country in 2015”. We are proud to have our work on the newly renovated M. Lee Pelton Theatre recognized as part of that criteria considered for the award. Please click on the following to view the entire article:
